Leucothoe is an ornamental bush forming a low spreading tuft. From April to June, clusters of small white bell-shaped flowers appear, which are slightly scented. The flowers measure 6 mm (0in) long and the clusters are 7 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) long.

Evergreen foliage composed of large dark green and shiny leaves, tinged with pink, are positioned on reddish branches.

It can reach a height of 1 m (3ft) at maturity. It is native to the moist forests of the southeastern United States. It is a hardy plant that can be planted in groups, borders, rockeries, and even in pots.

Leucothoe grows in shade or partial shade in a moist, acidic or neutral soil, but not chalky soil.
